Life above the heat

Jarabacoa and Constanza are where Dominicans go to escape the coastal heat. Both sit in the Cordillera Central in La Vega province, both have cool evenings and pine-covered hills, and both attract people who want space and fresh air rather than beaches. Their populations are almost identical, 66,316[1] in Constanza and 65,059[2] in Jarabacoa according to the same source, but the two towns feel quite different.

Jarabacoa is the more accessible and more developed of the pair, known for rivers, waterfalls, rafting and a growing community of second-home owners. Constanza sits higher, in a broad valley famous for farming: it grows much of the country's vegetables, strawberries and flowers. It's quieter, more agricultural and more remote. Which one suits you depends largely on how often you need the city.

Getting there

Both towns are reached from Cibao International (STI) near Santiago. Jarabacoa is 36 minutes by car[3]; Constanza is 81 minutes by car[4]. Both times come from the same routing source, so the verdict is clear: Jarabacoa is the far easier base if you plan to fly often or head down to Santiago for shopping and specialist care. The road to Constanza climbs through the mountains, so allow extra time in rain or after dark.

Costs: one town has much more data

This is where the comparison gets lopsided. Several cost metrics exist only for Jarabacoa:

  • Rent: a 1-bedroom is $266 per month[5] (range $178–$266 per month[5]) and a 3-bedroom $475 per month[6] (range $321–$475 per month[6]). These are Livingcost.org modelled estimates, not medians of real listings.
  • Cost of living: $513 per month[7] for one person excluding rent, also modelled by Livingcost.org.
  • Condo prices: $1,450 per m²[8] per square meter, from CLIC Inmobiliaria.

There is no published rent, cost-of-living or condo figure for Constanza, so we can't say which town is cheaper to live in. If you're seriously considering Constanza, budget time to research prices on the ground, ideally by renting for a few weeks before committing.

Land is the one property metric with figures for both towns, and both come from CLIC Inmobiliaria: $64.98 per m²[9] in Jarabacoa vs $225 per m²[10] in Constanza. On this like-for-like measure, Jarabacoa is the cheaper place to buy land, which matters if you're thinking of building your own mountain home.

Vacation rentals

AirROI data covers both towns. The average nightly rate is $228 per night[11] in Jarabacoa vs $129 per night[12] in Constanza, and occupancy is 21.1 %[13] vs 19 %[14]. Jarabacoa commands the higher rate and books slightly more often. Occupancy is modest in both, so if you're buying to rent out, model your returns conservatively and expect busy weekends and holidays rather than steady weekday demand.

Culture, food and healthcare

Jarabacoa keeps a lively calendar: a February carnival described as one of the most famous in the country, a Festival de las Flores every June, and big outdoor merengue concerts. The Cistercian Monasterio de Santa María del Evangelio is nearby. Food leans toward mountain-style cooking and local cafés, with Café Monte Alto a well-known stop and a cluster of restaurants around Umbrella Street and Hermanas Mirabal Street.

Constanza's character comes from its history and its farms: the Caamaño Monument, the historic Hotel Alto Cerro, the Divino Niño Monument and the legacy of Japanese, Spanish and Hungarian agricultural colonies in the town center. TripAdvisor lists 14 restaurants listed[15], including La Esquina brew pub and Mountain View Café.

Each town has a public municipal hospital: Hospital Municipal Octavia Gautier de Vidal in Jarabacoa, recently renovated with an emergency room and intensive care unit, and Hospital Municipal Dr. Pedro Antonio Céspedes in Constanza. For private specialist care, residents of both look to Santiago.

La Vega province recorded 20 homicides, Jan–Jun 2026[16]. That is a single provincial count shared by both towns, so it doesn't separate them.

Bottom line

Jarabacoa is the practical choice: closer to the airport and Santiago, better documented, cheaper land on comparable figures and a busier cultural life. Constanza rewards people who want genuine remoteness, a working farm valley and the cooler air that comes with its altitude, but go in knowing that cost data is scarce. Compare them side by side on Constanza vs Jarabacoa.
