Book the right airport
The Dominican Republic has more international airports than most Caribbean countries, which means almost every popular town is a reasonable drive from a runway. The trick is knowing which one to book. Fly into the wrong airport and a short transfer can turn into a half-day drive across the island.
Below, every town is grouped by its nearest international airport, with the typical drive time from that airport. All times come from the same routing source, so you can compare them directly. They assume normal traffic; rush hour around Santo Domingo and holiday weekends anywhere can add to them, and mountain or coastal roads are slower after dark or in heavy rain.
The east: Punta Cana and La Romana
Punta Cana International (PUJ) is the country's busiest airport and the one with the most direct flights from the US, Canada and Europe.
- Punta Cana: 9 minutes by car[1]
If you're heading to Punta Cana or Bávaro, this is the obvious choice: resorts, condos and the main beaches sit minutes from the terminal.
La Romana International (LRM) is a smaller airport right next to the Casa de Campo resort, with a shorter list of routes.
Both towns are a very short ride from LRM. Because its schedule is limited, many visitors to La Romana and Bayahibe land at PUJ or SDQ instead and accept a longer transfer in exchange for more flight options and lower fares. Check both before you book.
The capital and the southwest
Las Américas International (SDQ) sits east of Santo Domingo on the Caribbean coast and is the main gateway to the capital.
- Santo Domingo: 22 minutes by car[4]
- Barahona: 180 minutes by car[5]
Santo Domingo is a quick ride from the terminal outside rush hour. Barahona, in the remote southwest, is the longest transfer on this entire list. The coastal road beyond the capital is scenic, but plan to arrive in daylight and consider breaking the trip if you land late.
The Cibao and the mountains
Cibao International (STI) is just outside Santiago and is the gateway to the country's interior. It's popular with the Dominican diaspora and has direct flights to several US cities.
Santiago is the closest, Jarabacoa is an easy climb into the hills, and Constanza's mountain road takes noticeably longer. If you're torn between the two mountain towns, see Constanza vs Jarabacoa. And if you're choosing between the country's two big cities, Santiago vs Santo Domingo puts STI and SDQ side by side with rent, living costs and hospitals.
The north coast and Samaná
Gregorio Luperón International (POP) serves the Amber Coast from just outside Puerto Plata.
All three towns are close, with Sosúa the quickest to reach. That short hop is a big part of the north coast's appeal for people who split their year between the US and the DR. Weighing the two neighbors? Read Cabarete vs Sosúa.
Samaná El Catey International (AZS) is the airport for the Samaná peninsula.
- Las Terrenas: 34 minutes by car[12]
- Samaná: 50 minutes by car[13]
- Las Galeras: 82 minutes by car[14]
Las Terrenas is the closest of the three, while Las Galeras, out at the far tip of the peninsula, is the longest ride in this group. AZS has fewer international routes than PUJ or SDQ, so many travelers to the peninsula fly into one of the bigger airports and drive the rest of the way. If you go that route, it's worth comparing the total door-to-door time, not just the fare.
Bottom line
Book the airport, not just the country. Use PUJ for Punta Cana, SDQ for the capital and the southwest, STI for Santiago and the mountains, POP for Puerto Plata, Sosúa and Cabarete, and AZS for the Samaná peninsula. LRM is the closest option for La Romana and Bayahibe when its schedule works for you. Whichever you choose, check the drive time on the town page before you buy the ticket, especially if you're landing late.
